Key West Lighthouse

The Key West Lighthouse was essential to ships navigating the dangerous reefs of the Florida Keys. Built in 1865, the original tower was 65 feet tall with 15 lamps. In 1848 the Great Havana Hurricane destroyed the lighthouse, leaving only a sandy beach. A lightship served to guide vessels until a new beacon could be built.

In 1848 the new lighthouse was completed. Its tower required additional height in 1894 and was raised 20 feet where it sits today at 86 feet tall and 100 feet above sea level.
