NEW YORK

Fire Island
Fire Island's roots go back to its history as a whaling station in the mid-1600s. Nearly 200 years later, the Fire Island Lighthouse became a beacon for ships entering the New York Harbor. An eclectic retreat that's become the fashionable place to summer, Fire Island is known for its diversity - where gay and lesbian crowds, artists and scholars, bohemians, and the ultra-rich all mingle - and where they all use cool wagons to haul their beach gear.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

NORTH CAROLINA - OUTER BANKS

Cape Hatteras
Its southeastern point is home to the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which at 93 feet is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Cape Hatteras is of interest to oceanographers due to its confluence of two major Atlantic currents; and to naturalists who come to study the diverse range of wildlife species found here as a result. It's also known as a prime spot for shipwrecks, earning it the nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic."

Cape Lookout Lighthouse

NORTH CAROLINA

The Cape Lookout National Seashore encompasses three barrier islands along the southern Outer Banks. Historic villages, wild horses, and the diamond-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse are among the draws to this part of the "Crystal Coast."

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only diamond-patterned light tower in the U.S. Its checkered daymark is also a directional aid, as its black diamonds point north-south, and its white diamonds point east-west.
