Chincoteague Island
Made immortal in the children's classic Misty of Chincoteague, this barrier island is best known for its feral horses and its annual Pony Swim with neighboring Assateague Island. But Chincoteague, a Native American term for "beautiful land across the water," is also a picturesque town boasting sandy beaches, great restaurants and all the abundance of nature. It's home to the Assateague Lighthouse.

Virginia Beach
Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "longest pleasure beach in the U.S.," this vacation town is also a bustling metropolis - it's Virginia's most populous city. Several protected state parks, wildlife refuges and beaches keep Virginia Beach green enough to remain a classic American resort. The Old and New Cape Henry Lighthouses stand at its northern end.
